We’re constantly being told which trends to follow, which fashion rules to stick to, but today we’re here to tell you which rules you should be breaking this year and which starlets are leading the way.

Four Fashion Rules to Break:

Rule #1: Never wearing black with navy, or so the saying goes.

This one needs some immediate reconsidering. Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan and Gucci have already sent their models down the runway in this refreshing combo. And as far as we’re concerned, black and navy is THE color scheme for this winter. Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, Hilary Swank, Kelly Ripa and Ashley Olsen get it.

Rule #2: Don’t mix patterns.

I will warn you in advance that this look can easily go wrong if you’re not careful. Here’s the trick: make sure the dominant colors of both prints are the same. If you do, you can mix plaids with stripes, polka-dots and or florals. We tagged Kristen Stewart, Rachel Bilson and Whitney Port doing it right.
Rule #3: Always match your purse to your shoes.

Yes, it makes for a classy and streamlined look and if you’re wearing a crazy print it probably is a good idea. However, if you’re wearing all black, it’s fun and fresh to mix up your accessories. It’s also a great way to get good use out of your wardrobe staples— reinvent the same dress by changing up your bag and shoes. Anything can work from hot pink shoes with a cobalt leopard-print clutch to python-print pumps with a black leather messenger bag. Just make sure the shoes and bags are similar in feel. For example, no country western cowboy boots with a fancy black leather clutch. Stylistas like Natalie Portman, Kate Beckinsale and Christina Ricci have nailed this one.

Rule #4 Only wear sequins at night.

For the past few seasons, we’ve seen shimmer all over the red carpet and now a little sparkle has happily progressed to daywear. An all-over sequined blazer with jeans and a tee feels flirty and casual— and makes the transition from day to night perfectly.  For something a little edgier, a slouchy pair of sequin pants paired with a cozy sweater also has the same effect. We’re happy to say celebs like Khloe Kardashian, Cheryl Cole, Sienna Miller, and Hayden Panettiere have been spotted successfully rocking this trend.
